Yankees place Marcus Thames on disabled list

NEW YORK — The Yankees officially placed outfielder Marcus Thames on the 15-day disabled list with a mild right hamstring strain, which he’s spent at least a week playing through. In his place, the Yankees recalled corner outfielder/first baseman Chad Huffman.
The Yankees claimed Huffman, 25, when the Padres waived him in April. A right-handed hitter, Huffman was hitting .279 with five homers and 22 RBI in 53 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, before his recall. Huffman started in right field against the Astros. Thames said he felt his Hamstring tighten as he took off to field a third-inning double down the left field in the Yankees’ 9-3 victory against the Astros on Saturday.
“That’s when I felt it grab a little bit,” said Thames, who is hitting .276 with two homers and 10 RBI in 33 games for the Yankees. “I thought it was going to release. It never did.”
Thames said he expects to be ready to play within the minimum 15-days he’ll be on the D.L.
Also: Girardi said Alex Rodriguez could be available on Tuesday against the Phillies, though the manager doesn’t know to what capacity. “My hope is that we’ll have him on Tuesday,” he said. “I can’t tell you what exactly that would be, if it would be a DH possibly or full-fledged player.” .., Relief pitcher Alfredo Aceves, on the disabled list with a lower back strain, felt fine after throwing briefly off flat ground on Sunday. Though he used his full pitching motion, Aceves said he threw only at about 60 percent of full power.

Mariano Rivera came in in the 9th and nailed the coffin shut on his 14th save of the season. Win #37 for the Yanks came in a 4-2 Final at Orioles Park in Baltimore MD. CC Sabathia picked up win #6 and has brought his season record to 6-3 with a 4.01 ERA. Sabathia entered play vs the O’s last night with a 4.14 ERA so any improvement is good. Kevin Russo made the play of the game when he dove and caught a ball off the bat of Orioles Adam Jones. Russo dove head first to take an extra base hit away from Jones. It was the 3rd good Web gem from Russo since his recall 3 weeks ago. To view the Russo Catch look here.

Yankees Draft Pick Heathcott Drives in winning run in first pro game of 2010.

CHARLESTON, SC – Slade Heathcott grounded a bases-loaded RBI single to centerfield in the bottom of the 10th to lead the Charleston RiverDogs over the Hickory Crawdads, 5-4, in front 2,319 fans in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Wednesday night.

With the victory Charleston improves to 23-30 and snaps an eight-game losing streak against Hickory at Riley Park, while the Crawdads fall to 33-21.

Heathcott, the Yankees’ first round selection in the 2009 Draft, hit a 2-0 fastball from Kyle Ocampo (2-1) passed the diving attempt of second baseman Travis Adair for the game-winner. The Texas native finished 1-for-5 in his SAL debut after being added to the roster earlier on Wednesday.

Charleston began the 10th with a Hector Rabago walk. Emerson Landoni pinch-ran for Rabago and landed on third after Kelvin Castro’s double down the left-field line. Ray Kruml was then intentionally walked, setting the stage for Heathcott’s heroics.

Ryan Flannery (3-2) tossed a season-best 3.0 scoreless innings out of the RiverDogs bullpen to earn the win allowing just two hits with two strikeouts.

Hickory took a 1-0 lead in the first against Sean Black, when Leury Garcia scored on Miguel Velazquez’s sacrifice fly.

The RiverDogs took control against Robbie Erlin in the third scoring three times to take a 3-1 lead. Rabago led off with a single, and then scored on Castro’s RBI triple to right-centerfield. Kruml proceeded to drive a RBI triple of his own into the left-field corner to score Castro. Kruml came home on J.R. Murphy’s RBI groundout to conclude the inning.

Velazquez clubbed his 10th home run of the year, and second of the series, off Black in the fourth to trim the lead to 3-2. Zach Zaneski doubled inside the right-field line and came around to score on a throwing error for a 3-3 tie.

Black took a no-decision for Charleston lasting 5.2 innings, while surrendering three runs – one earned – on five hits with one walk and a season-high seven strikeouts.

Luke Murton ripped a two-out RBI single in the sixth against Erlin to give the RiverDogs the lead back at 4-3, but Jared Prince’s sacrifice fly tied the score at 4-4 in the top of the seventh.

Erlin gave up four runs in 6.0 innings in his no-decision, while walking two and sinking four. The former third round pick in 2009 had allowed only four runs all year in 34.1 innings before this start.

Castro knocked a triple and a double and was on base all four times for Charleston, which won its fourth walkoff game of the year. Velazquez and Adair had two hits each for Hickory.

Game three of this series is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Thursday night. Charleston sends right-hander Jairo Heredia (1-1, 6.17) to the mound, while Hickory counters with right-hander Matt Thompson (4-2, 4.21).

Tonight’s first pitch is scheduled for approximately 8 p.m. ET.

It’s going to be cold and raw tonight at Yankee Stadium, but it looks like we’re going to have baseball between the Yankees and the Red Sox … which officially proves I know nothing about the weather.

The usual M*A*S*H* unit updates from the Yankees clubhouse, in short — Nick Johnson had surgery today and won’t be able to begin swinging a bat for four to six weeks … Jorge Posada still feels swelling in the bottom of his right foot and might start Wednesday … Nick Swisher hit left-handed off a tee and might start Wednesday … Posada could be available to pinch-hit tonight; Swisher definitely would be against a lefty … Alfredo Aceves had a cortisone shot administered four days ago and seems to be walking around a little better.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to MR. OCTOBER: Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson was born on this day in 1946 and turns 64 today. Jackson played five seasons with the Yankees from 1977-81, batting .281 with 144HR in 653 games and winning two World Series (1977-78). His No. 44 was retired by the Yankees in 1993.
